rainforest revision Flashcards
what are the different layers of the rainforest?
forest floor, under story, canopy, emergent.
describe what the different layers of the rainforest do.
forest floor- this is where all the insects and large predators live as it is damp, humid and dark ( it is sheltered by the trees above). Under Story- this is where a lot of the young trees are. The trees in the rainforest have to fight for sunlight so the trees in the canopy can’t get as much sunlight as they need because it is being blocked by the bigger trees. Canopy- this is for quite big trees as it is almost at the top of the rainforest. The trees here have been exposed to quite a lot of sunlight. This is an area for winged animals such as birds. Other animals such as sloths and monkeys live here as well. emergent- this is the highest peak of the rainforest as the trees here grow very high.
how has vegetation has adapted to survive in the rainforest?
Some trees have big roots that are above the ground because all the nutrients are on the top of the soil, plants grow quite waxy surfaces so that when it rains, it doesn’t absorb and they rot less.
Outline the causes of deforestation.
It has an impact on the climate because trees take in carbon dioxide and if there are no trees then the carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere and helps to push global warming even further then it already is, it gives animals no habitat.
Explain the positive and impacts of deforestation.
it gives us more room for us to explore and gives us paper and for farming.
Explain the negative impacts of deforestation.
it helps warm up the atmosphere, it kills animal’s habitats meaning they have no place to live, if people are living in the rainforest like tribes, then they would be disrupting their home as well.
