Raine et al. Flashcards
Methodology (Research methods)
1) Quasi-experiment
2) Matched pairs design
3) IV = NGRI or not & DV = Brain differences
4) Sample was obtained using opportunity sampling
Methodology (Participants)
1) 41 pps (39 men, 2 women) with a mean age of 34.3
2) All charged with man slaughter or murder and all pleaded NGRI or incompetence to stand trial
3) Pps had some form of mental impairment:
6 - schizophrenics
23 - history of head injury or organic brain damage
3 - history of psychoactive drug abuse
2 - affective disorder
2 - epilepsy
3 - history of hyperactivity and learning disability
2 - personality disorder
4) Control group was formed by matching each murderer with a normal individual of the same sex and age. Only the 6 schizophrenics were matched
Procedures
1) PET scan was used to study the active brain whilst the pps were given an injection of a tracer called FDG
2) Pps were all asked to do a CPT which aimed to activate target areas of the brain. They were able to practise it before receiving the FDG
3) 30 seconds before the FDG injection, pps started the CPT
4) 32 minutes after the FDG injection, a PET scan was done of each participant with 10 horizontal slices of their brain being recorded by using the cortical peel and box techniques
