Railroad Tank Cars Flashcards
These tank cars usually carry flammable and nonflammable compressed gases or poisonous compressed gases. These tank cars are top loading with pressure ranging from 100 to 600 psig. These tank cars are often equipped with insulated and/or jacketed thermal protection. Cars that do not have insulated or thermal protection have at least the top two thirds of the tank painted white.
Pressure tank cars
Sometimes known as general service or low-pressure tank cars, they can transport a variety of hazardous materials. In most cases, these tank cars can be distinguished by the visible manway cover and fittings at the top of the tank. Each tank car has at least one manway that allows access to the interior of the car. These cars can be compartmented with up to six compartments.
Non-pressure tank cars
These cars are transported in non-pressure tank cars. They are usually difficult to differentiate from other non-pressure tank cars. However, sometimes they can be distinguished by characteristics of staining or corrosion around the manway area. Some of these cars are painted with a white band of ______-resistant paint running vertically around the tank car at the manway.
Corrosive liquid tank cars
These tank cars carry low-pressure, extremely cold refrigerated liquids. They are of the tank-within-a-tank style, with an alloy steel interior tank supported within a strong outer tank. You can recognize these cars by the relatively clean lines. Fittings for loading/unloading, pressure relief, and venting are located in ground-level cabinets at diagonal corners of the car, or in the center at one end of the car.
Cryogenic liquid tank cars
These cars are 40 foot, box type, open frame cars. Inside the frame is a visible cluster of 30 seamless, non-insulated, 40 foot steel cylinders arranged horizontally and permanently attached to the car. Each end of the car is enclosed in a steel case.
High pressure tube car
These cars are railcars designed to carry dry commodities. They are unloaded by applying air or an inert gas.
