What is the first RAF ongoing operation?

A

In December 2001 the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which aimed to assist the Afghan Transitional Authority in creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment in Kabul and its surrounding area, was created.

This support came in a number of different forms and comprised about 850 RAF personnel. Tactical reconnaissance and close air support is provided by Tornado GR4 Force; in-theatre airlift is provided by the RAF C130s and supplemented by Comms Fleet aircraft, including the [link not available] and BAE 146; air refuelling support for Coalition aircraft is provided by the VC10, while the Sentinel R1 and MQ-9 Reaper play a large part in delivering ISTAR support.

Q

What is the second RAF ongoing operation?

A

British Forces South Atlantic Islands

This protection is not only through the airbridge from Brize Norton to Ascension and onwards to the Falkland Islands, but also through deterrence patrols across the immense area between the islands. The RAF also provides Search and Rescue (SAR) support to the islands and across the fisheries conservation zone, whilst a Hercules can be switched from providing air transport including the ability to parachute supply drops to remote and isolated communities in an emergency, to assisting in Search and Rescue or medical evacuation.
A flight of Typhoon Air Defence fighters operate from Mount Pleasant Airfield to watch over the islands and guard them from the air.

Q

What is the third RAF ongoing operation?

A

Iraq

The low level presence that remained in Iraq to support full withdrawal comprised Puma helicopters at Baghdad to assist the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Merlin helicopters in Kuwait to assist with the withdrawal of elements of equipment and personnel from Southern Iraq and a small detachment of C1300 Hercules aircraft to provide air transport in and out of Iraq. The Puma and Merlin Helicopters both fully withdrew from Iraq and Kuwait by July 2009. The Merlin Helicopters were the last aircraft to leave Iraq as they transported the final equipment and personnel from the region.

Q

What is Op SHADER?

A

Operation Shader is the operational code name given to the British participation in the ongoing military intervention against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The operation began in Iraq on 26 September 2014, following a formal request for assistance by the Iraqi government. Prior to this, the Royal Air Force had been engaged in a humanitarian relief effort over Mount Sinjar, which involved multiple aid airdrops by transport aircraft and the airlifting of displaced refugees. By 21 October 2014, the intervention had extended onto Syria with the Royal Air Force only mandated to conduct surveillance flights over the country. On 2 December 2015, the House of Commons approved British airstrikes against ISIL in Syria.] The UK is one of several countries directly involved in the ongoing Syrian conflict that started in March 2011.

In March 2016, the Ministry of Defence announced that over 1,000 personnel were engaged in theater and that the Royal Air Force had conducted a total of 640 airstrikes, flying over 2,200 sorties, killing almost 1,000 ISIL fighters.
