Raditation + Universe Flashcards
Alpha particle
Beta particle
Gamma ray
Alpha- deflected in magnetic and electric fields- helium nucleus
Beta- deflected in magnetic and electric fields. electron
Gamma-not deflected, e.m wave
Examples of each beta, gamma, alpha
Beta, thickness control
Gamma- tracers like gamma camera- flash
Alpha- smoke detectors
Structure of atom
Electron-
Proton
Neutron
Electron- nearly nothing
Proton- positive (1) same mass as neutron
Neutron- same mass as proton (1)
Ionising power
Alpha-very
Gamma- weakly
Electromagnetic (spectrum) Microwaves visible light X Ray’s gamma rays ultraviolet radio waves infrared
Order Radio waves Micro waves Infra red Visible light Ultra violet X Ray's Gamma rays
Isotope
Isotope is an atom with different number of neutrons. (Each isotope has eight protons on the bottom number atomic) would not have oxygen otherwise
Electromagnetic radiation
Waves_move_energy_
Waves move energy they can be reflected, transmitted or absorbed.
When absorbed it makes the substance hotter
May create an alternate current
Wave speed
Wave speed = frequency in HZ X wavelength in m
(All electromagnetic waves travel at 300,000,000 m/s in vacuum
Gamma rays + ultra viloet and X Ray’s
Gamma +X Ray mainly pass through soft tissue
Large doses can kill cells, small doses can cause cancer
Infa red and visible light
Can send signals down optical fibres and so travel in curved paths
Microwaves
Pass through earths atmosphere and used to send signals too and from satellites
Big Bang theory
Further away a galaxy, is the bigger the redshift and therefore the faster the galaxy is moving away. Showing the universe is expanding
Like the absorption lines have all been shifted
