Radiology - Posterior Mediastinum/Heart Flashcards
what is the lymphatic duct?
part of immune system, carry lympatic fluid from abdomen up back into the cardiovascular system
what is the most inferior part of the lymphatic duct?
cisterna chyli
where does the thoracic duct empty?
empties into junction of left internal jugular and left subclavian veins
where does the right lymphatic duct empty?
at the junction of right internal jugular and right subclavian veins
what would be the likely cause of a swollen and visible lump around Virchows node?
tumour of the stomach
what is chylophorax?
lymphatic fluid in the pleural space?
when would a chylophorax happen?
generally after trauma or surgery
looks like yellowy fatty fluid
what effect does the sympathetic NS have on the heart?
faster HR
faster conduction velocity
harder contractility
faster relaxation of ventricles
what else can the SA node firing rate be altered by?
circulating hormones
-hyperthyroidim
-hypothyroidism
serum ion conc (K)
-hyperkalemia
-hypokalemia
cellular hypoxia
-usually from ischemia
drugs
how can we surgically fix hyperhidrosis?
can burn the ganglion of the sympathetic chain at a certain location
which ganglionic chain goes along the posterior mediastinum?
sympathetic
what is the technical name for fainting?
vasovagal reaction/ syncope
what happens during a vasovagal. reaction?
standing still
blood pools in legs
less blood properly circulating
less blood for heart to pump
less blood for perfusion to brain
what is carotid sinus syndrome?
people have an overactive problem with carotid vagus nerve
without much of an obvious trigger the vagus nerve is being stimulated causing them to pass out
dangerous thing to have
as vagus nerve relaxes the heart
what are some specialised features to fetal circulation?
ductus arteriosus
foreman ovale
ductus venous
