how can you tell the small bowel and large bowel apart
A
Small Bowel Obstruction (left) and Large Bowel Obstruction (right). Note the smoother appearance of the large bowel obstruction as the haustra have been ballooned out while the small bowel almost looks like an earth worm with the banding from the valvulae conniventes.
Remember also that parts of the large bowel are retroperitoneal, while others are intraperitoneal - the transverse colon is suspended by the transverse mesocolon so it is more mobile than the ascending or descending colon either side of it, which are retroperitoneal. In this image you can see the transverse colon forming a āZā shape in the centre of the abdomen as it loops and bends back upon itself. See if you can identify any other parts of the large bowel
