Radioactivity Flashcards

Q
What was observed in Rutherford’s alpha scattering experiments?
A
Most alpha particles passed straight through the thin gold foil.
A few were scattered through large angles.
A very small number were scattered through angles greater than 90°.

Q
How were Rutherford’s results important in establishing the structure of the atom?
A
The results implied that there was a small mass, the nucleus, which was positively charged.
The nucleus must be very small and the results helped estimate the size of the nucleus.
