Radioactivity Flashcards
What are alpha particles?
Helium nuclei
What are beta particles?
Electrons emitted from a nucleus
What are gamma rays?
Form of electromagnetic radiation
What are the helium nuclei (alpha) made of?
2 neutrons, 2 protons
Are alpha and beta slow or fast moving particles?
Alpha - slow
Beta - fast
Are alpha and beta positive or negative?
Alpha - strong positive
Beta - can be either
Alpha radiation is extremely ionising. Why?
They have a big mass and a big charge so they are able to remove the electrons from a lot of atoms
State two properties of gamma radiation
Weakly ionising
Can penetrate through a lot
For every beta particle emitted, what happens in the nucleus?
A neutron becomes a proton
Name the 3 types of radiation and what they can penetrate
Alpha - paper
Beta - aluminium
Gamma - lead
