Radioactivity Flashcards
Revision
What is the relative mass and relative charge of a Proton?
Relative mass=1 Relative charge=1
What is the relative mass and relative charge of a neutron?
Relative mass=1 Relative charge=0
What is the relative mass and relative charge of an electron?
Relative mass=0.0005 Relative charge=-1
What is an Ion?
An atom that has gained or lost an electron to form a charge
Ionizing Radiation?
When forms of radiation collide with neutral atoms or molecules(1). This changes the structure by knocking off electrons(2). They leave behind ions called ionizing radiation.
What can alpha penetrate and how far in the air?
Paper, skin, and air and a few cm
What can beta penetrate and how far in the air?
Thin aluminum and around 1 meter.
What can gamma penetrate and how far in the air?
Thick lead or concrete and a few kilometres
Alpha radiation
Large and unpredictable and kicks out 2 protons and 2 neutrons
Beta radiation
In small nuclei, a neutron changes into a proton, emitting an electron (beta particle) from the nucleus.
Gamma radiation
After beta or alpha occured, the nucleus might have too much energy so energy removed in form of a gamma ray
