Radioactivity ❀ Flashcards
What is Radioactivity?
Radioactivity is the spontaneous emission from the nucleus of certain atoms.
What are the three types of emission?
The three types of emissions are:
-alpha particles (α) Helium nucleus, i.e, 2p & 2n
-beta particles (𝛽), high speed electrons
-gamma radiation (γ) electromagnetic waves, very short wavelength
Where are the particles emitted from the atom?
These particles are emitted from the unstable nuclei of certain atoms.
What is the range of penetration for an alpha particle?
The range of penetration is a thin sheet of aluminum or paper.
What is the range of penetration of beta particles?
The range of penetration of beta particles is several cm of aluminum.
What is the range of penetration of gamma particles?
The range of penetration of gamma particles are a few cm of lead.
