Radio active decay and half-life Flashcards
Ionising radiation
Radiation that can remove an electron from an atom, producing heavy POS ion.
Alpha radiation
stream of particles consisting of two protons and neutrons emitted from nucleus.
Beta positive radiation
stream of energetic positrons emitted from the atomic nucleus during decay.
Beta negative radiation
stream of particles emitted from the nucleus that are identical to electrons.
Gamma radiation
electromagnetic radiation of extremely short wave length and high frequency.
Alpha decay
An emission of 2 protons and 2 neutrons from the parent nucleus.
Beta negative decay
emission of beta negative particles (electrons) from the parent nucleus.
Beta positive decay
emission of beta positive particles (protons) from the parent nucleus.
Gamma decay
a form of radioactivity in which the nucleus is atomically unstable, emitting gamma radiation.
Half-life
time taken for half the radioactive atoms in a sample to decay.
