What is violence? What does it consist of?
- the use of physical force
- > resulting in harm
- everything from serious threats, harm damage to property, murder and mayhem
- power and fear mongering
- can be symbolic
- > used to send a message regarding the economy, politics or ideological beleifs
What is radicalization
- process by which individuals are introduced to ideological messages/beliefs
- > encourages movement from moderate mainstream beliefs towards extreme ones
-not always violent
How is radicalization to violence different from radicalization
- it is using violence
- > to promote political, ideological or religious extremism
- > referred to as “homegrown terrorism”
What is violent extremism. Does it pertain to race, ethnicity religion or culture. Is there also one pathway or profile towards embracing violent extremism?
- the process of taking radical views
- > putting them into violent action
- note it is not limited to a specific race, ethnicity, religion or culture
- no single pathway to embrace violent extremism
What is terrorism as defined by the criminal code? Is there a universal definition?
- an act committed
- > for political, religious or ideological purpose
- > it is used to intimidate the public
What is moral panic? How is it reinforced?
- an episode
- > often triggered by alarming media stories
- > reinforced by reactive laws and public policy
- media often sensationalizes stories
- > exaggerated or misdirected public concern most of the time
- > creates anxiety fear or anger
What are the sources of initial clues in foiled terrors

What is right wing radicalization. Who are they hostile towards?
- defence of a racial or ethnic pseudo-national identity
- >radical hostility towards state authorities, minorities, immigrants, or left-wing political groups.
What is left wing radicalization? What is their main goal and what groups do they involve?
- they are an anti-capitalism group
- >includes radical environmental or animal rights groups
What are religious radicalization groups
- they are based off political interpretations of a religion
- > they want to defend their religious identity
- > believe that their religious identity is under attack
What two motivations do single-issue radicalization groups seek after
- they can be promoted by a single issue
- >or ultra-individualist and independent extremist movements
Describe criteria of insignificant behaviour or democratic means of expression
- frequently argues with family and friends defending their beliefs
- adopts visible signs of their identity
- expresses desire to be involved in identity, political movement or religious practices
- adopts religious or political beliefs that is consistent with societal values
