Radiation Physics Flashcards
Ionizing radiation
Can produce ions by removing/ adding an e- to an atom
Two groups of ionizing radiation:
Particulate & electromagnetic
What is particulate radiation
Tiny particles of matter that possess mass & travel in straight lines & high speeds.
What are 4 types of particulate radiation?
Electrons
Alpha particles- emitted from nuclei of heavy metals
Protons - accelerated hydrogen nuclei
Neutrons - accelerated particles
Electromagnetic radiation
Propagation of wavelike energy, w out mass, thru space or matter
Electromagnetic radiation examples?
- Man made & occur naturally (microwave, visible light)
- Arranged in electromagnetic spectrum
- can move as a particle and wave
Particle concept
Characterizes electromagnetic radiation in terms of discrete bundles of energy called photons or quanta
Wave concepts
Characterizes electromagnetic radiation as waves & focused on velocity, wavelength and frequency
Cathode - negative
- tungsten wire filament
- supplies e- I o generate x-rays
- tungsten filament produces electrons when heated
Anode - positive
- thin tungsten plate embedded in a solid copper rod
- tungsten target serves as a focal spot and converts e- into photons
- copper stem dissipates heat away from tungsten target
Thermionic emission
Release of e- from tungsten filament when current is passing thru it
Outer shell e- of tungsten filament get energy to move away & form e- cloud
