Radiation Flashcards
1
Q
What is Alpha
A
Alpha is a helium nucleus (made up of 2 protons and 2 electrons). It has a large mass.
2
Q
What is Beta
A
Beta is a fast moving electron. It has a negative charge. It has a very small mass.
3
Q
What is Gamma
A
Gamma is a high energy EM wave. These are caused by changes is the nucleus. They have to mass and no energy.
4
Q
What is ionisation
A
When a neutral atom becomes charged we say it has been ionised.
5
Q
How do each types of the radiation ionise.
A
Alpha - Highly ionising
Beta - Weakly ionising
Gamma - Weakly ionising
6
Q
What material can’t each of the radiations pass through
A
Alpha - Paper
Beta - Aluminium
Gamma - 3cm of Lead
