Radiation Flashcards
Radiation definition
The release of energy in the form of waves or particles
Non-ionizing
A type of low-energy radiation that does not have enough energy to remove an electron
Ionizing
A type of high-energy radiation that has enough energy to remove an electron
3 types of radiation
a = alpha
b = beta
y = gamma
Radioisotopes definition
An unstable form of a chemical element that releases radiation as it breaks down and becomes more stable.
Radioactivity
The release of energy from the decay of the nuclei of certain kinds of isotopes
Nuclear decay
The process by which an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy by radiation
Half-life
The time required for a quantity (of substance) to reduce to half of its initial value
