Radiation Flashcards
What is an isotope
Same number of protons different number of neutrons
How can an electron change orbit
They absorb energy (radiation)
What is ionisation
When an electron gains too much radiation it can escape from the atom completely
What are the dangers of ionising radiation
-causes cells to mutate=cancer
What is alpha radiation
When an alpha particle is emitted from the nucleus so the atom becomes a different element
What is positron decay
During positron decay a proton turns into a neutron and a positron is emitted from nucleus and an atom becomes a different element.
Features of positron decay
-+1 charge
-positron annihilates immediately
-positron is a type of antimatter
Positron decay equation:
23 23 0
Mg ————> Na + e
12 11 1
Features of alpha radiation
-stopped by paper
-2+ charge
-strongly ionising
-range of a few cm in the air
-dangerous inside
What is beta minus
When a beta particle is emitted from the nucleus the atom becomes a different element
Features of beta minus radiation
-stopped by thin aluminium
-1- charge
-weakly ionising
-range of a few m in air
Beta minus equation
- 0
C———>. N + e
- 0
- 1
Give an approximation for the radius of an atom
1x10^-10 metres
What are the three subatomic constituents of an atom?
- Proton
- Neutron
- Electron
Where is most of the mass of an atom concentrated?
In the nucleus
