Radiation Flashcards
Whats the order of the wave spectrum
Radiowaves —–> Microwaves —–> Infa-red radiation —–> Visible light —–> UV Light —–> X-Rays —–> Gamma Rays
What are the 3 stretches that infa-radiation causes on atoms
Symetrical Stretch, Anti-Symetrical Stretch and Bending Stretch
What do radiowaves do
They allow Broadcast possible
Microwaves
Microwaves heat up food in microwaves
What can Infa-red Radiation do?
Infa-red Radiation can be used to as vision to see in the dark
IR also increases the vibrational energy of molecules which causes an increase in heat. This is possible because of its frequency.
As the mass increases the vibration decreases
If the strength of the bond increases then the vibration increases as well.
[NOT NEEDED AS MUCH BUT IF YOU GOT EXTRA BRAIN SPACE THEN MEMORISE]
(would make you feel warm as your skin absorbs the radiation)
What are the Diatomic molecules features with radiation?
Diatomic Molecules are held by a single bond that can only stretch and compress.
The atoms pull apart and push together
Diatomic Molecules have threshold frequencies that they vibrate at, after the threshold is met. most of the radiation passes through.
What is Infa-red Spectroscopy used for?
It’s used to identify functional groups in molecules
What is Infa-red Spectrometry used for?
It measures the intensity of a radiation from wavelengths.
Usually from Infa-red Spectroscopy.
Visible Light?
Visible light is the only part of the wave spectrum that humans can see
UV/ Ultra-Violet Light
Ultra violet light causes skin tan from the sun
kills bacteria and viruses
detects forgery
What do X-Rays do?
X-ray waves allows us to see bones and the condition of them as well as letting us see hidden bombs
What do gamma rays do?
Gamma Rays kill cancer cells and sterilize
Have you looked at the IR Spectrum of molecules?
[YOU NEED TO ATTACK YOUR WEAKNESSES AND TURN THEM INTO YOUR STRENGTHS]

What is the meaning of frequency?
The measure of how many waves would pass you in one second if you were standing still
[Watch the videos to correct if wrong]
How is the wave length expressed?
The wave length of infrared radiation is expressed in wave numbers (1/λ)
