An intentional interference with the opponents opportunity to play the shot. This infraction results in the player causing the hinder losing the point or loss of serve
Avoidable hinder
An unintentional interference with the opponents opportunity to play a shot. When play stops because of a “hinder”, the point is to be replayed
Unavoidable hinders
A court hinder occurs when the ball strikes an irregular portion of the court such as an edge of a door or a can on the floor that impedes play. When play stops because of a “hinder”, the point is to be replayed
Court hinder
The area of the court in front of the service court line
Front court
The section of the court nearest the back wall
Back court
The area between the service and short line and the two sidewalls
Service zone
A serve that strikes the back wall on the fly. A fault.
“Long”
A serve that does not clear the short line on the fly. A fault.
“Short”
A serve that hits 3 walls before hitting the floor is illegal and considered a fault
“3 wall serve”
If the ball hits the ceiling during the serve it is considered a fault
“Ceiling serve”
A loss of serve to an opponent
“Side out”
This occurs when the server fails to hit the front wall first during the service delivery. It is not a fault but rather a side out with the serve going to the opponent
Out serve
A serve that does not land in the proper area. An illegal serve. The server gets two faults before it is considered a side out
Fault
This is the simultaneous ready for both the server and receiver. It is the servers responsibility to look and see if the receiver is ready. The receiver can motion to the server that they are not ready by holding their racket above the head or turning their back to the front wall
The 10 second rule
A ball that strikes the ceiling-front wall or front wall-ceiling in sequence
Ceiling shot
A defensive shot, hit along a side wall so that it follows a path high over center court and falls with little rebound into a back corner. The ball might touch a side wall close to the back corner
Lob
A 3-player racquetball game designed with the server playing against the other two players
Cutthroat
A shot that carries along a side wall 1 to 2 inches from the wall, designed to pass a person in the front court
Down the line passing shot
A 2 wall passing shot that is designed to pass someone by hitting front wall, side wall
Cross court passing shot
A stroke hit from the racquet side of the body
Forehand
A stroke hit from the non-racquet side of the body
Backhand
A conventional method of holding the racquet in the shake hands position
Eastern forehand grip
A conventional grip for a backhand that puts the index knuckle on top and the thumb behind the grip
Eastern backhand grip
Called the no change grip, it puts the racquet half way between an eastern forehand and eastern backhand grip
Continental grip
Any ball that strikes the front wall hard and low so that the rebound with the floor occurs almost simultaneously with the wall. A very offensive shot
Kill shot
The best two out of three games
Match
A kill shot from over the shoulder
Overhead kill shot
The front line of the service zone
Service line
The back line of the service zone
Short line
The dotted line 5 feet behind the short line that the receiver cannot cross before making contact with a serve in the air
The imaginary line or receiving line
A ball that is hit so that your opponent has plenty of time to make the play
Set up
Striking the ball in the air from a rebound off the front wall
Volley
The continuous exchange of shots during the play of a point
Rally
A legal serve that is totally missed by the receiver
