Racism In Wider Society - Mike Noon (1993) Flashcards
1
Q
what does Noon claim?
A
Claims that ethnic minorities face racist discrimination in society
2
Q
describe the study he conducted in 1993
A
- sent identical letters of enquiry abt future employment to the top 100 UK companies signed by the surnames “Patel” and “Evans”
- same qualifications, but Noon found the companies were more helpful & encouraging towards the white candidate
3
Q
how does Noon’s study link to material deprivation?
A
- companies form perceptions based on ethnicity, i.e. insecure grasp of english, prioritising family over work, less ambition etc..
- influences who is/isn’t hired, which leads to low levels of employment and lower pay, which increases risk of material deprivation
4
Q
contemporary example that supports Noon’s claims - BBC Article, Feb 2016 (5)
A
- Black workers earn less than white collegues
- difference in pay amounts to around 23%
- average pay gap between a black worker with A-Levels and a white worker with A-Levels is around 14%
- pay gap clear even when both groups attended Russell Group universities
- shows that even 20 years later, racism exists in wider society
5
Q
eval for Noon’s argument
A
- fail to mention the progress towards equality being made
- anti-discrimination laws, equal opportunities policies and regular re-visiting of existing laws has an impact in tackling racism
- much better training within companies in equality
