Ethnicity
: the degree to which a person identifies with and feels an attachment to a particular ethnic group
Symbolic ethnicity
Limited or occasional displays of ethnic pride and identity that are primarily expressive—for public display—rather than instrumental as a major component of their daily social lives.
Ethnogenesis
the gradual emergence of a new, distinct ethnic identity in response to changing social circumstances
Genitic Diversity within a group or between groups
individuals from different populations can be genetically more similar than individuals from the same population

The idea that most human characteristics, physical and mental, are determined at conception by hereditary factors passed from parent to offspring
Hypodescent:
the one-drop rule; a socially constructed racial classification system in which a person of mixed racial heritage is automatically categorized as a member of the less (or least) privileged group
White Privilege
most white people think of themselves in non-racial terms (a privilege of whiteness).
Whites are more likely to receive bank loans, mortgages, and receive preferential treatment in stores and restaurants.
Variation in skin tone and clinal distributions
