How is the rabies vaccine administered?
IM in the deltoid area in doses of 1 mL according to the recommended schedules for pre- and post- exposure prophylaxis
vaccine should NEVER be adminsitered in the gluteal area because this results in in lower antibody titers
Rabies
a rapidly progressive CNS infection caused by a ribonucleic acid (RNA) rhabdovirus affecting mammals, including humans
transmission via dogs, raccoons, skunks, bats, fox, coyote
incubation period can be up to 3 months
generally considerd to be 100% fatal once sx develop
most cases in developing countries
Clinical Manifestation of Rabies infection
hydrophobia (inability to swallow water) – classic***
pharyngeal spasms
aerophobia (fear of drafts of fresh air)
hyperactivity
Diagnosis of Rabies
Negri bodies (esoinophilic inclusion bodies in the cytoplasm of hippocampal nerve cells) are considered pathognomic and are found in the brain of dead animals
animals are observed 7 - 10 days to see if sx develop – if not they’re released or given back to owner
