Rabbits Flashcards
What are the three most common rabbit breeds used in research? Which ones are not albinos?
New zealand white (Albino)
Dutch Belted
Flemish giant
What is the Watanabe rabbit a model for and why?
They are a model for Lipid metabolism and hypercholesterolemia bc they have a spontaneous geneteic mutation of its low‐density lipoprotein receptor, similar to human familial hypercholesterolemia.
In what way is rabbit dentition different from rodents?
They have an additonal pair of incisors called peg teeth
2( I 2/1 C 0/0 P 3/2 M 3/3 )
What nutritional requirements do cecotrophs fulfill for rabbits?
B vitamins and electrolytes
They fulfill their nutritional requirements because the cecotrophs are covered in mucus to protect them from the acid pH of the stomach and are high in water, nitrogen, electrolytes, and B vitamins. These feces contain twice the protein and half the fiber of the firm, dry fecal pellets.
How are heterophils different from the neutrophils seen in other species?
have intracytoplasmic eosinophilic granules that cause them to resemble eosinophils.
What are often present in the urine, causing it to appear cloudy?
high quantities of calcium carbonate and ammonium magnesium phosphate crystals
True or False: Rabbits are induced ovulators, similar to cats and ferrets.
True
What behavior do female rabbits show approximately 3–4 days prior to giving birth?
Females begin building a nest 3–4 days prior to parturition by plucking fur from their dewlap and sides.
True or False: Rabbit kits need to nurse every 2 hours for the first several weeks.
false, they nurse 1x a day
How do temperature requirements for rabbits differ from other species such as mice?
they are heat sensitive
the room temperature should be maintained within a range of 16°–22°C (61°–72°F), a temperature lower than recommended for other species.
How can handlers prevent traumatic spinal fractures in rabbits?
The hind limbs and back need to be supported when lifting, carrying, or handling in any way
What small blood vessel is easily accessible and useful for both blood withdrawal and intravenous injections?
marginal ear vein
What are the possible side effects of Freund’s Complete Adjuvant?
Skin lesions such small nodules, diffuse swelling, and open abscesses or scabbing. Lesions are less likely to be significant if smaller injection volumes
Why are rabbits difficult to intubate?
The oral cavity is small and the tongue is relatively large, larynx is difficult to visualize
Which of the following is a zoonotic agent?
- Pasteurella multocida
- Treponema paraluiscuniculi
- Fransicella tularensis
- Clostridium spiroforme
Fransicella tularensis
