RAAS notes Flashcards
How much of the body is made of water?
60%
Where is the water in our body?
2/3 (66%) is inside the cells. 1/4 (25%) is in between the cells (the interstitial space). 1/12 (8%) is in the blood.
The main electrolytes in our body?
Sodium is the main electrolyte outside of cells. Potassium is the main electrolyte inside of cells.
Renin?
Hormone secreted by the kidneys in response to dehydration. This sets off a chain reaction that ends with angiotensin II and aldosterone. Both of which work to conserve water in the kidneys and absorb water in the intestines.
Angiotensin II functions?
Stimulates sodium reuptake in the kidneys, water reuptake in the kidneys, increases thirst, constricts blood vessels, tells the adrenal glands to secrete aldosterone.
Aldosterone?
Hormone produced by the adrenals. Increases sodium (and therefore water) absorption in the intestines and kidneys.
Drip Drop and RAAS?
Drip drop gives the body exactly what it craves when it is dehydrated. The necessary sodium, potassium (among other electrolytes) and glucose the body needs to absorb water as efficiently as possible.
