- DEFINITION OF TERMS
An auxiliary branch of laboratory medicine which deals with the examination by chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, and other medical laboratory procedures and techniques which will aid the physician in the diagnosis, study and treatment of disease and in the promotion of health in general.

Practice of Medical Technology (PD 498)
A person shall be deemed in the practice of medical technology within the meaning of this Act, who shall for a fee, salary or other compensation or reward paid or given directly or indirectly through another, renders any of the following professional services for the purpose of aiding the physician in the diagnosis, study and treatment of diseases and in promotion of health in general:
Examination of tissues, secretions, & excretions of the human body & body fluids
Bloodbanking procedures
Parasitologic, mycologic & microbiologic techniques
Histopathologic and cytotechnology
Clinical research
Preparations & standardization of reagents
Clinical laboratory quality control
Collection and preservation of specimen
A duly registered physician who is specially trained in methods of laboratory medicine, of the gross and microscopic study and interpretation of tissues, secretions and excretions of the human body and its functions in order to diagnose disease, follow its course, determine the effectivity of treatment, ascertain cause of death and advance medicine by means of research
Pathologist
A person who engages in the work of medical technology under the supervision of a pathologist or licensed physician authorized by the DOH in places where there is no pathologist and who having passed a prescribed course (BSMT/BS Hygiene – now known as BS Public Health) of training and examination as registered under the provision of this Act.
Medical Technologist
A person, who not a graduate of BSMT/BS Hygiene but having passed the corresponding civil service examination, performs the work of medical technology under the supervision of RMT or qualified pathologist.
Medical Technician(RA 5527)
A person certified and registered with the Board qualified to assist a medical technologist and/or qualified pathologist in the practice of Medical Technology as defined in this Act. (Rated 70-74.9 in board exam)
Medical Laboratory Technician (PD 498)
A clinical laboratory, office, agency, clinic, hospital or sanitarium duly approved by the Department of Health or its authorized agency.
Simply known as affiliated institutions for training and is subject for annual renewal
Accredited Medical Technology Training Laboratory
Any school, college or university which offers a course in Medical Technology approved by the Department of Education in accordance with the requirements under this Act, upon recommendation of the council of medical technology education.
Recognized School of Medical Technology
The council of medical technology established under this Act. (Curriculum)
