R.3 Flashcards
Absolute value
The distance between a number and zero
Opposite of a real number?
Two numbers the are the same distance from zero but on opposite sides of the number line
Two rules of adding real numbers
Same sign, values add to absolute value and apply common sign
Different signs, subtract smaller absolute value from larger and apply sign of larger absolute value
Subtraction of real numbers
A-B = A + (-B)
Multiplication of real numbers
Same sign
Diff sign
Zero
Same sign always positive
Different sign always negative
Times zero always zero
Dividing real numbers
Multiply by reciprocal
Division of real numbers property's Same sign Diff sign Zero being divided Divided by zero
Same sign quotient is positive
Diff sign negative
Zero divided by anything is zero
Can’t divide by zero
How to negatives work with squaring
With no parenthesis the answer is negative
With parenthesis the answer is positive
How do negatives work with square roots
Negatives can’t be squared
But if a negative sign is in front of the square root sign the answer is negative
The order of operations
1, simplify expressions with grouping symbols like parenthesis, fraction bars and absolute value , radicals
2, exponents, radicals, absolute value
3, multiplication and division from left to right
4, addition and subtraction left to right
