R0 Flashcards
What is an infectious disease?
Disease caused by a microorganism and therefore potentially transferable to new individuals
What is a communicable disease?
An infectious disease that can be transmitted from one individual to another
What is a contagious disease?
A very communicable disease capable of spreading readily between individuals
What is a transmissible disease?
A disease that can only be transmitted between individuals by unnatural routes
What are D Kappa and Beta?
D- how long the person is infectious for
Kappa- number of people the infected animal contacts
Beta- the proportion of contacted individuals that end up catching the disease
What is R0 and what is its equation?
The number of new cases that arise directly from an infectious individual which enters an entirely susceptible population
R0 = D x K x B
What does R0 show?
R0 > 1 epidemic is likely
R0 = 1 endemic disease
R0 < 1 Extinction of the pathogen is likely
What is the equation for R?
R = R0 x Proportion of susceptible population
How can disease be controlled to affect R and R0?
Vaccination Quarantine Culling Biosecurity Antibiotics
