Personification
A type of figurative language that applies human like qualities to animals, inanimate objects, and concepts.
ex: The trees whispered.
The sun greeted the townsfolk with its joyful beams.
Hyperbole
the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. In rhetoric, it is also sometimes known as auxesis. In poetry and oratory, it emphasizes, evokes strong feelings, and creates strong impressions. As a figure of speech, it is usually not meant to be taken literally.
Ex: Students response to a bad grade- “This feels like the end of the world!”
Idiom
a group of words, established by usage, as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words (e.g., rain cats and dogs, see the light ).
Symbol
Anything that hints at something else, usually something abstract, such as an idea or belief. It is usually an object, a person, a situation, or an action that has a literal meaning in a story but suggests or represents other meanings.
ex: Fire=anger, passion, love
skull=mortality, death
Dug
The pap or udder of female mammalia; also the teat or nipple; usually in reference to suckling.
Tetchy
bad-tempered and irritable.
Rood
- a crucifix, especially one positioned above the rood screen of a church or on a beam over the entrance to the chancel.
- a measure of land area equal to a quarter of an acre.
Halidam/Halidom
- Something considered holy.
- A sanctuary.
Warrant
justify or necessitate (a certain course of action).
Disposition
- a person’s inherent qualities of mind and character.
- the way in which something is placed or arranged, especially in relation to other things.
Esteem
respect and admiration, typically for a person.
Valiant
- possessing or acting with bravery or boldness : courageous. valiant soldiers.
- marked by, exhibiting, or carried out with courage or determination : heroic.
Volume
- a book forming part of a work or series.
- the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container, especially when great.
Lineament
- a distinctive feature or characteristic, especially of the face.
- a linear feature on the earth’s surface, such as a fault.
Margent/Margin
- the part of a page or sheet outside the main body of printed or written matter
- the outside limit and adjoining surface of something : EDGE
