Spoken to: Romeo

Circumstances : Tybalt has shown up and has started fighting Romeo. As the fights continues Mercutio has an opportunity to kill Tybalt. As he is about to kill Tybalt, Romeo interrupts Mercutio. As Mercutio is distracted Tybalt takes the opportunity to stab Mercutio. When Romeo and Benvolio notices that Mercutio has been stabbed they believe Mercutio is fine and the wound can’t be that bad. Only Mercutio knows that the wound is fatal and he is going to die.

DP: Advances the plot : This advances the plot as it ends up in Tybalt’s death. Romeo is so hurt and mad about Mercutio dying that he chooses to go and kill Tybalt. Romeo wants revenge on Tybalt killing Mercutio, and ends up killing Tybalt. This advances the plot as it ends up with Mercutio and Tybalt dead, and Romeo’s banishment.

DP : Develops theme of destructive effects of grudges : This quote shows the destructive effect of grudges as Mercutio dies. Mercutio’s death can be blamed on the grudge of the Capulets and Montegues. As Mercutio is dying he tells Romeo and Tybalt “Plagues on both your houses”. He’s blaming the capulets and Montegues for his death. Even Mercutio knows this when he acknowledges that the grudge has made “worm’s meat of me”.

Circumstances : Juliet and Romeo have just been married. Juliet is by her window waiting for Romeo to show up so that they can celebrate their wedding night.

DP: Creates dramatic irony : As Juliet is delivering her Soliloquy, Romeo is fighting Tybalt and about to kill him. Juliet is talking about how much she loves Romeo and how she can’t wait to see him. What Juliet doesn’t know is that Romeo is currently being banished for killing her cousin, Tybalt. This creates dramatic irony as Juliet doesn’t know the situation that Romeo is in.

DP : Develops pathos : When reading this you can really see how much Juliet loves Romeo and how she can’t wait to see him again. Juliet is so profound in love with Romeo in this scene that she just wants it to be night so she can see him again. What Juliet doesn’t know that Romeo has just been banished, and that she probably wont be able to see him again for a long time. This further develops pathos for Juliet as you feel bad for Juliet.

Circumstances : Romeo has just murdered Tybalt, and has been Vanished from Verona. Romeo heads to Friar Laurence’s cell to hide out and gain some wisdom on what to do.

DP: Character Revelation : This builds Romeo’s character as now he is guilty of murdering Tybalt and vanished from Verona. While at Friar Laurence’s cell Romeo is deeply upset and emotional. He is upset about being vanished, upset about Juliet being upset and that he can’t see her on their wedding night. This builds Romeo’s character as it shows Romeo’s emotional side and his though process.

DP : Advances the plot : This scene continues to advance the plot as Romeo has now been vanished. Romeo is about to leave but before he does he stops at Friar Laurence’s cell. Him and Friar Lawrence build a plan so that Romeo can see Juliet again.

Circumstances : Balthasar has just told Romeo that Juliet is dead.

DP: explores theme of struggle to escape fate : In this scene Romeo states that he will defy the stars. Romeo wants to defy fate and wants to do something that will change the fate of his and Juliet’s death. Romeo thinks that his plan will escape and change his fate. His plan actually leads to his fate. Romeo is so defiant on changing fate, and is so emotional on the matter that his actions continue to lead to his fate.

DP : Advances the plot : This advances the plot as it causes Romeo to create a plan that will eventually lead to his fate. After Romeo hears that Juliet dies he creates a plan where he will go to Juliet’s tomb and kill himself with poison. We need this scene to advances the play so Rome’s fate will take place.

As Benvolio and Mercutio are discussing the challenge Mercutio states that he is just as a good fighter as Tybalt and would fight him.

DP: Creates suspense : This quote further creates suspense as Benvolio is warning Mercutio to leave. The day is hot and Capulet’s are around and Benvolio doesn’t want a fight. Benvolio acknowledges that if the Capulets were to show up there would be a brawl, where most likely they couldn;t escape. This builds suspense as it questions the reader if there will be a brawl and what the outcome will be.

DP : Foreshadows : This quote foreshadows the future fight between Mercutio, Tybalt and Romeo. Benvolio states that if the Capulets show up, there will be another brawl. Benvolio foreshadows the fight as the capulets show up, ending with a brawl between Mercutio, Romeo and Tybalt.

Circumstances : Juliet has just found out that Romeo has killed Tybalt, and is therefore banished from Verona. And if he is to return he is to be killed. Juliet hearing the news is upset and mad at Romeo as he has just killed her cousin.

DP: Develops theme of loss of innocence : This scene starts Juliet’s loss of innocence. Juliet is torn between her family and Romeo. At first she is mad at Romeo, because he killed Tybalt. She doesn’t understand how a person like Romeo could murder Tybalt. She feels betrayed by Romeo as she loves him, but she also loved Tybalt.

DP : Develops theme of drive of both love and hate : In this scene Juliet feels both love and hate. Juliet is filled with rage after hearing that Romeo killed Tybalt, as she loved Tybalt. But she also loves Romeo, so she is confused on what to do. She doesn’t understand how an amazing person like Romeo, who she loves could ever kill Tyablt.

Circumstances : The capulets have just found Juliet and Romeo dead. Friar Lawrence revealed everything about Romeo and Juliet such as the marriage and the plan and the poison.

DP: Develops theme of destructive effects of grudges : Romeo and Juliets death really shows the theme of destructive effects of grudges. Without the grudge, Romeo and Juliet’s death wouldn’t have had to happen. It is the death of both Romeo and Juliet that end the long lasted grudge. The fact that both Romeo and Juliet had to die to end the grudge highlights the destructive and harmful effects of the grudge on both Montegues and Capulets

DP : Advances plot : Romeo and Juliets death advances the plot as it ended the grudge between the Montegues and Capulets. Without their death, the grudge would never end. When both families realize that they died for their love for each other, they also realize that they should have been more loving and accepting of the other family. Both Montegues and Capulets decide to end the grudge and honor Romeo and Juliet.

Circumstances : Capulet has just agreed to Paris’s arranged marriage with Juliet. Capulet hopes that this marriage will cheer Juliet up and make her happier. What capulet doesn’t know that Juliet can’t marry Paris, as Juliet is already married to Paris. When Capulet tells Juliet about the marriage, she refuses it.

DP: Character Revelation : This shows development in Capulet’s character, especially between now and act 1. Prior to Tybalt’s death, Capulet allowed the marriage proposal between Paris and Juliet. But an important part of it was that Juliet was gonna decide if she wanted to marry Paris. Capulet wanted Juliet to be happy with who she married and wanted whats best for Juliet. After Tybalt’s death Capulet doesn’t care about Juliet’s feelings on the matter. Capulet gladly accepts Paris’ proposal, without hearing Juliet’s feelings.

DP : Creates dramatic irony : Capulet accepts Paris’s request to marry Juliet. But Capulet doesn’t know that Juliet has married Romeo. This is quite ironic because Capulet is thinking that this marriage will make Juliet happier. But this marriage wouldn’t be possible as she is already married, and would never want to marry Paris

Circumstances : Friar Lawrence has just discoverd that the letters to Romeo weren’t delivered, because Father Paul had come in contact with the plague and had to isolate. Friar Lawrence seems upset at this, but decides to create a plan to rescue Juliet from the tomb.

DP: Creates Dramatic Irony : This quote creates dramatic irony because Friar Lawrence creates this plan to “rescue” Juliet from the tomb because Romeo didn’t get the letter from Friar John. But Romeo is actually heading to verona with the plan of killing himself because Juliet is dead. This is ironic because Friar Lawrence is doing this thinking that Romeo doesn’t know, but Romeo knows and has a plan of his own

DP : Creates Suspense : This quote further leads to a feeling of suspense. So much is happening at the same time that you don’t know what will happen next. Romeo didn’t get the letters, so Friar Lawrence believes that Romeo doesn’t know about Juliet. But Romeo knows about Juliet and has created his own plan. Friar Lawrence decided to create his own plan to rescue Juliet from the tomb and Juliet is supposed to wake up this night. This scene has a lot going on and makes you question what is going to happen.

Circumstances : Juliet heads to Friar Laurence’s cell for wisdom after finding out that her parents are forcing her to mary Paris, even if she doesn’t want to. Her and Friar Lawrence create a plan, where she will drink a vial that will make her appear dead. After her “funeral” Romeo will rescue her and take her away. After going to Friar laurence’s cell Juliet tells Capulet that she will marry Paris, Capulet decides to move the wedding another day. This causes Juliet to worry what will happen as time was already an issue before the wedding being moved before hand

DP: Advances the plot : Juliet drinking the vial advances the plot. It starts her and the Friars Lawrence’s plan. If their plan goes as it’s supposed to, her and Romeo will end up together away from Verona. This also starts the beginning of their death.

DP : Character Revelation : In the beginning of the soliloquy Juliet starts very rational. She’s worried about the vial and what will happen, now that she has less time. Juliet has very rational thinking and rational fears. But the more that she thinks about what will happen, the more she becomes less rational and more emotional. She starts worrying about unrationalized fears. Through the soliloquy she goes from rational to irrational.

DP: Foreshadowing : When Romeo dreams of him being dead, and Juliet wakes him up, it foreshadows his death. It foreshadows Romeo’s death and Juliet’s as the next time that they will meet and be reunited, will be in the afterworld after death.

DP : Creates Dramatic Irony : This scene is quite dramatic as Romeo is dreaming of him being dead, Juliet is currently “dead” in Verona waiting for Romeo to rescue her. Romeo interprets his dream as a good thing, thinking that it means that Romeo and Juliet will reunite soon. But Romeo doesn’t know that Juliet is dead, and thinks that they will see each other again soon. While he is dreaming if this Juliet is dead, waiting for Romeo,

Circumstances : Tybalt has shown up and has asked to speak with Benvolio and Mercutio. Mercutio wants a fight to happen, so he continues to joke and try to rile up Tybalt. As they’re about to fight Romeo shows up. Tybalt tries to fight Romeo, but Romeo tries to leave. Tybalt wanting a fight starts attacking romeo yelling at him to fight him.

DP: Character Revelation : This quote shows how Romeo isn’t an aggressive character, and truly doesn’t believe in hate. Romeo is trying to win the fight with love instead of hate. He doesn’t want to fight Tybalt as he doesn’t hate Tybalt or the Capulets. Romeo tries to break away from the fight because he sees no gain or purpose in fighting.

DP : Creates Suspense : When Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt it further creates suspense, Tybalt in his aggressive nature continues to try to push Romeo to fight him. Romeo in his emotional nature declines Tybalt’s threat to fight. This is extremely suspenseful as you don’t know how Tybalt is gonna response or is Romeo is gonna end up fighting Tybalt.

Circumstances : Capulet has just told Juliet that she will marry Paris. Juliet tells her father that she will not marry Paris, which causes Capulet to get mad at Juliet and to tell her that if she doesn’t mary Paris that she will be banished from her family and will live on the streets.

DP: Character Revelation : In this scene Juliet is very emotional. Juliet is so upset that she is threating to kill herself. This is quite different from the Juliet that is usually very rational and logical. This is weird for Juliet because she isn’t usually this emotional character, who is being dramatic and thinking using her emotions.

DP : Develops Dramatic Irony : This creates dramatic Irony as it is a mirror scene of what Romeo did in Friar Lawrence’s cell. Both Romeo and Juliet threatened to kill themself, when faced with an issue. When Romeo was in Friar Lawrence’s cell and he heard that Juliet was upset, he pulled out a sword and threatened to stab himself. When Juliet was in Friar Lawrence’s cell she got so upset about having to marry Paris, that she also threatened to stab herself. Both characters threatened to stab themself, without knowing the other did the same.

Circumstances : Romeo had just killed Paris, but didn’t realize it until he turned the body.

DP: Develops theme of destructive effects of grudges : Paris’ death shows the destructive effects of grudges. Paris was an innocent victim of the grudge. He was happy to marry Juliet, then Juliet dies and he’s devastated. He wants to go to Juliet’s tomb because he’s so sad and wants to see her. His death was caused by the Montegue and Capulet grudge, without it he wouldn’t have been killed.

DP : Develops Pathos for Paris : After Paris’s death you feel bad for him. Paris was an innocent character. The only thing he wanted to do was marry and love Juliet. The only reason he was at the tomb was to mourn Juliet. When Romeo appeared the tomb, he perceived him as an enemy. He was still trying to do the right thing, by protecting Juliet’s tomb. When he dies, it’s sad as he was an innocent victim.

Circumstances : Capulet has just told Juliet that she has to Mary Paris. Juliet is very upset as she is married to Romeo and doesn’t want to marry Paris. Capulet continues to yell at Juliet telling her that she has no choice and if she doesn’t she will be banished from her family. Juliet asks the nurse what to do, and the Nurse just tells her to do what her dad says and go along with the marriage. Juliet is taken a back by this as the Nurse has been talking nicely about Romeo and now feels very betrayed by the Nurse.

DP: Defines Relationship between characters : This scene is very important between the Nurse and Juliet. The only people that know about Juliet’s and Romeos marriage are the Nurse and Friar Lawrence. Juliet feels as though 2 people are the only 2 people who she can trust. Now that she feels betrayed by the nurse, Juliet can only really trust the Friar.

DP : Advances the plot : As Juliet can no longer trust nurse, she can only now trust the Friar. Juliet feels so betrayed by the nurse, she can no longer trust her. Juliet feels alone and betrayed. This is starts Juliet’s loss of innocence.

DP: Creates Dramatic Irony : This creates dramatic irony as we know that Juliet is not actually dead. Capulet thinks that Juliet is actually dead, but she’s just pretending to be dead. Capulet and her family doesn’t know that she actually took a vial of poison to appear dead, but the readers do. Creating dramatic irony.

DP : Advances the plot : As Capulet announces to have a funeral for Juliet, it advances Juliet’s and the friars plan. This way Juliet can go in the tomb, and wait for Romeo. As well as her family will think that she is dead.

DP: Creates Dramatic Irony : This scene shows dramatic irony as Juliet accepts the marriage. But the readers know that she isn’t really accepting of the marriage. She’s just pretending to accept it, so she can end up with Juliet. Capulet is so happy thinking his daughter is gonna marry Paris. He’s so happy that he even moves it up a day, so it can happen quicker.

DP : Advances the plot : When the wedding is moved up, it condenses the time and advances the plot. This creates problems for Juliet as now everything has to be done quicker. Now Juliet has to drink the vial quicker, The letters have to be sent quicker. This is problematic because now everything is condensed and less thought out.
