Q

Summary

A

Throwing yourself into love and loving someone to the point of not being able to live without them is dangerous. Romeo and Juliet never get to know each other as people and never get the chance to experience an adult relationship. Their love for each other is purely based on visual love and sexual desire. Shakespeare is telling us to value relationships and get to know someone before you devote your life to them.

Q

Parental love

A

The love of parents is a flippant subject throughout the play, especially regarding juliets parents. In the beginning of the Play capulet loves and respects Juliet, but when she disobeys him, he turns on her and displays hatred towards her. This causes Juliet to disobey him and, in part, causes her death. After their death, the parents regret this decision and pledge to build a statue of them together. Through this, Shakespeare is saying parents should listen to their children.

Q

Death throughout the play

A

Death is presented as many things throughout the play. It is first shown as a catalyst to end the feud between the families. This Presents death as something good and admirable. Later in the play, death is personified. After mercutios death, imagery of mercutio taking either tybalt or Romeo with him is used to represent death. After juliets death, death is personified as having married and “deflowered” her. Overall, death is seen as this overpowering force that not even Romeo and juliets love can overcome. However it is established in the prologue that deaths actions drive forward the ending of the feud. Therefore we are commanded right from the beginning of the play to accept and condone the actions of death in bringing about the ending of the argument.
