Usual dosage range for route:
0.5-1 unit/kg/day SubQ in divided doses.

4 units Subcut.
Why is this client receiving this medication?
Type 2 diabetic
How does this medication work?
- Lowers blood glucose by stimulating glucose uptake in skeletal muscle and fat.
- Control of hyperglycemia in diabetic patients
What side effects are most likely to occur secondary to this medication?
HYPOGLYCEMIA (cold and clammy), erythema, ANAPHYLAXIS, pruritus.
What actions do I as a nurse need to take specific to this medication?
(Including adverse reactions I need to be aware of)
- Assess patient periodically for symptoms of hypoglycemia.
- Monitor body weight periodically. Changes in weight may necessitate changes in insulin dose.
- Monitor blood glucose q 6hrs.
What do I as a nurse need to teach the client about this medication?
- proper technique for administration.
- Demonstrate technique for mixing insulins by drawing up regular insulin first and rolling intermediate-acting insulin vial between palms to mix, rather than shaking.
- medication controls hyperglycemia but does not cure diabetes. Therapy is long term.
- importance of compliance with nutritional guidelines and regular exercise as directed by health care professional.
- Instruct patient on signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia.
