What is the main point for Paul describing how he rebuked Peter to the face in Antioch?

A

o When certain men from James showed up (Gal. 2:12; Acts 15:24) Peter’s behavior drastically changed.
o Barnabas and some other Jews followed Peter’s bad example and started to do the same thing.
• What did Paul say to Peter?
o If you as a Jew live like the Gentiles, then why should Gentiles have to worry about the living like Jews?
o While Paul and the others were not Gentile sinners, the also as Christians had not been justified by works of the law (circumcision, dietary laws, etc.)
o Peter was playing the same deadly game the Judaizers were playing.

Q

Describe the process through which Peter came to acknowledge the place of Gentiles in the early church? (use Gospels, Acts, and epistles)

A

Peter and the Jew/Gentile relations

  1. Jesus’ Teaching and commission (Matt. 28:18-20; Acts 1:8)- Although Jesus’ ministry was primarily for the lost sheep of Israel, He did anticipate and occasionally exemplify a furtherance of the Gospel to all people of all races.
  2. Peter’s work among the circumcised (Acts 2-9)- Peter demonstrated a love for truth and desire to preach and serve the Lord among the Jews in his early ministry, including his Acts 2 sermon.
  3. Peter’s vision, Cornelius, and Peter’s report (acts 10-11)- Peter has a vision where he is explicitly told “What god has cleansed, no longer consider unholy” (10:15). This was applied to Cornelius as peter reported that God gifted the Gentiles just as he had Israel.
  4. Paul rebukes Peter for inconsistency (Gal. 2)- Paul rebuked peter and pillar in the Jerusalem church who previously had accepted him, for being inconsistent in the :table- fellowship” in Antioch.
  5. The Jerusalem Meeting (Acts 15)- Peter, along with the apostles and elders, met to discuss the issue. Peter himself silenced the Judaizers by reflecting on his own experiences. (15:5-12)
