Qutes Analysis Flashcards
” Out, damned spot! Out, I say!”
Repetition of “out” reveals her desperation to rid herself of her guilt. The exclamative here is shoving her panicked state and her desperation to get rid of this blood that she has on her hands. The word “spot’ here is a symbol of the blood stain from king Duncan’s murder. The spot also represents her inescapable sense of guilt. Spot of blood is a key motif ( recurring theme within the play)
“Unsex me here”
The verb “unsex” shows how she wants to remove and strip away all of her feminine qualities such as kindness and caring and replace them with evil and masculinity. This emphasises her ambitious nature as she goes against the typical patriarchal gender norms where men were seen as dominant and powerful in comparison to women who were seen as kind and loving. Her deviation from social norms would evoke a Jacobean audience as this sort of behaviour would be seen as unusual. Therefore, this shows her ambitious mindset as she deviates from the stereotypical social norms.
“Take my milk for gall”
