TQ: Simply, what is the Qur’an?
-A collection of sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, dictated to the disciples who learned them off by heart, and therby compiled the collection.

Muhammad was born in Mecca about 570 CE.
Died at age 62.

Muhammad’s wife.

From when muhammed migrated from Mecca to the place that came to be called Medina.

- Age 40
- The Cave of Hira, outside Mecca.
- Ergo last 23 years of his life are the source of the Qur’an
TQ: What are the components of the Qur’an?
- Made up of Sura’s.
- Each Sura is composed of a number of verses, each verse called an aya.
- Scholars distinguish the Suras from different periods (Meccan Suras// Medinan Suras)

- A holy land with virgins, no concern for sin, a lifestyle of pleasure and bliss (food and wine).

TQ: How was the text originally received by the public?
At the time of the revelation, books were not readily available and so it was common for people to instead learn it by heart.
Any person who is able to accomplish this is known as a hafiz.

The Sunnah and the Hadith are more focused on the character, and examples of the Prophet Muhammad as a historical figure.
