What is a direct quote?
Exact thing that someone said
What is an indirect quote?
When you talk about what someone said, but not in their exact words.
How do you introduce a direct quote?
Comma or colon, and put quotations around the exact words.
How to introduce an indirect quote?
The word “That” to talk about what someone said. Doesn’t need quotations. (IE: The author says that ___)
How to introduce an indirect quote with a direct phrase?
“That” to talk about what someone said, and the exact phrase goes in quotations. (IE: Phillips states that these tests are “reasonably reliable” in a home setting)
If punctuation at the end of a quote is a colon or semicolon, does it go inside the quotation marks, or after?
It always goes outside the quotations. (IE: Participants mentioned “anticipation” or “excitement”; we have noted this emotional language in our analysis.)
If a question mark & exclamation point isn’t part of the quote, does it go inside the quotation marks, or after?
Outside. (IE: Did she call it “noise reduction”?)
When writing a paper & need to include the page number of a quote, where should the parentheses go?
Outside of quotations. {IE: She wrote, “Many participants were reluctant to try meditation” (page 23).}
What is the rule for a quote inside a quote?
Inside quote gets single quotation makrs. (IE: One of my classmates said, “I don’t understand what the author means by ‘absolute threshold.’”)
When punctuating a title, when should you use quotations vs italics/underline?
