Repetitive pronoun ‘my’ repeated throughout the poem to show how the duke is possessive, he is self obsessed and it’s all about him and also believes his wife belonged to him. He see’s her as a object owned. He is showing his power over his Duchess.

Used to show how vain the duke is. ‘Fra’ means brother suggesting that the artist was monk. So this is suggesting that the picture was painted by a monk to make it clear that the Artist was not romantically involved with the duchess. So that doesn’t prove Duchess face whilst painting the picture

He is paranoid and insecure, he thinks it means something. This presents the Duke as being weak.

Drum like beat which echos the sound of horses and also all of these words are used because ‘ered’ sound has a phonetic similarity to ‘errd’ which means to do something wrong. So there is a reminder that their was a mistake made

Personification of the weather as ‘merciless’ and attacking them but really the soldiers should be fighting this emphasizes the atmosphere and the weather.

Soldiers are losing hope to their patriotic side of them and it is dehumanizing them so even religion seems pointless.

Rhetorical question shows confusion of the soldiers. Conditions are so bad that they can no longer tell whats normal anymore.
