  • adj “crowded”- illustrates how scrooge is presented with multitude of opportunities to befriend others and perform civic duties
  • yet chooses to be ignorant to ubiquitous poverty that permeated society and continues to reject social responsibility.
  • “warning” emblematic of stratification which divided wealthy and poor. part of Dickens’ wider social commentary: individuals that shared similar ideologies to Scrooge were reason that systems in place such as the poor law existed which discriminated against the most vulnerable people in society.
