Quizzes Flashcards
What actions should be undertaken at the jaw registration stage during partial denture construction?
The centric jaw relation
Lip support and other muscular support
Mould and shade of teeth
The occlusal rim surfaces to conform to the patients existing occlusion and dentition
What is the definition of ‘centric jaw relation’?
The relation of the mandible to the maxilla which the mandible in its most retruded position
Also known as retruded jaw relation and retruded contact position
What is the retruded arc of closure?
The arc described by any point on the mandible during closing movement made with the condolences in their most posterior position
What is centric occlusion?
Maximal contact between opposing teeth
What is the freeway space?
The space between the maxillary and Mandibular occlusal surfaces when the mandible is in rest position
What is the neutral zone?
The space in the mouth, limited by the tongue, lips, cheeks and residual alveolar ridges, which dentures should occupy
What is an embrasure?
The space between two adjacent teeth which opens out from their contact point
What can be used to record bite registration?
Modelling wax
Impression material paste
What is the fox’s occlusal plane guide used for?
To aid carving the maxillary rim until it’s parallel to the line joining the inferior border if the aka of the nose to the midpoint of the tragus of the ear
What is the purpose of surveying dental casts?
To determine the optimum path of insertion for a proposed denture
To identify useable undercuts for clasping and unwanted undercuts so they can be blocked out
What is the use for the mounting table on a surveyor?
Where the cast sits
What is the vertical column of a surveyor used for?
Supports the double jointed arm
What is the double jointed arm of the surveyor used for?
Where the hand piece is held
What is the chuck of an articulate used for?
To secure various surveying instruments
What is support?
The mechanical function which reduces mucosal loading of a partial denture
What is bracing?
The mechanical function which prevents lateral shifting of a partial denture
What is bracing provided by?
Bracing arm, colleting and the rigid 2/3rds of the retentive clasp above the survey line
What is retention?
The mechanical function preventing displacement of a partial denture
(Flexible clasp tips)
Which factors may influence the possible pano of insertion of a partial denture?
Retention, guide surfaces, aesthetics
What should be avoided when determining a path of insertion?
Interferences
Compromised appearance
Poor distribution of retentive undercuts
What is the function of the active arm, reciprocal arm and occlusal rest if a clasp?
Active arm = engages undercut for direct retention
Reciprocal arm = prevents tooth movement
Occlusal rest = Distributed occlusal load through the teeth
What length should direct retainers be at least in cm?
At least 1 cm
What are the reasons for master cast duplication?
To produce a model that has unwanted undercuts blocked out
To produce an extra model retaining the original cast
To produce a model without wax on it used for blocking out undercuts, useful for later stages in denture making when casts need to be flashed and boiled
What are the advantages of articulating casts in an average value articulator?
To be able to check the occlusion when the processed dentures are made
To assist in the construction of dentures
To be able to check the occlusion in the lingual aspect
To replicate simple jaw movements with measurements taken from a sample of the general population
To be able to study the patients lateral and protrusive movements
