Q

Explain the Dred Scott decision.

A

The Dred Scott decision happened in March 1857. It all took place when an army doctor owned by Dred Scott sensed he was enslaved. Owning a slave where he lived was illegal, so he moved to Missuri but Scott did not think this was fair so he got antislavery lawyers to try and sue his way to freedom. This case would go to the supreme court in which it would not be fair at all for Scott and Roger B. Tanney would say he was not a freeman for two reasons. The first reason is that he was not allowed to sue a white person because he was black. He also said living in a free state did not make it wrong for the doctor to have him. This obviously was not right, this also wound not slide in today’s times but this definitely shocked many people. This led many people to be outraged which made it a big debate, hence where they got the name.

28
Q

The compromise of 1850

A

The compromise of 1850 were 5 bills that were passed because of Clay’s proposal. This could have never happened because President Taylor was not in favor of this at all, but he would die in 1850 and president Fillmore would support Clay’s compromise. This compromise pleased the North by admitting California into a free state. This would also ban slave trade in the capital. To lease the south so everything is fair it allowed popular sovereignty, which would be used to decide slavery. But the south got a new slave law, which they did like. This law would be called the fugitive slave law and would basically say he is most likely a runaway slave and he would get no right to prove innocent then would be brought back to the south. This also made Northern citizens capture slaves, which made them really angry. So now the north is angry. Northerners would band together and resist this law though.
