What is MS?
Multiple sclerosis is a an autoimmune disease that causes breakdown of the protective covering of nerves
Key symptoms of MS
fatigue, muscle spasticity, ataxia, vision loss/nystagmus
How to diagnose MS?
no definitive test, but MRI –> showing brain plaques (3-4mm)
Treatment for MS:
relapse management
(immunosuppressants)
Corticosteroids:
-prednisone (mainly used)
-methylprednisolone (short term inflammation therapy)
-dexamethasone (IV)
Treatment for MS:
immunomodulator (DMT)
Glatiramer acetate :
Does not suppress immune system and reduces inflammation and demyelination in CNS
* slows progression of MS *
what med is used to manage muscle spasticity in MS?
Baclofen, dantrolene
-monitor for dizziness, drowsiness, weakness and nausea
-report jaundice and weakness to provider, avoid stopping abruptly
what med is used to manage paresthesia/seizures/neuropathic pain associated with MS?
Gabapentin, carbamazepine
what med is used to manage overreactive/spastic bladder?
Anticholinergic: oxybutynin
when taking psyllium ( bulk forming laxative) , nursing interventions for med admin?
take with 8oz of water
what med is used for ataxia in MS?
beta blocker and a benzodiazepine
propranolol and clonazepam
what med is used in Parkinson’s?
Levodopa and Carbidopa
Adverse effects of levodopa and carbidopa?
Dyskinesia – from wearing off phenomenon
Nausea
Orthostatic Hypotension
Difficulty swallowing
