Analogy
A similarity between two things; a comparison of two things with an emphasis on several similarities, usually for the purpose of explaining the less familiar by its resemblance to the more familiar.
Metaphor
An indirect comparison of two things. The speaker will take a term that usually applies to one thing and applies it to a second thing, suggesting the second is like the first.
Model
A smaller, simpler version of something, such as an architect’s model of a building, used for the purpose of understanding the larger, more complicated thing
To generalize
To say something about a group of things based on what you know about a few of those things
Sample
The particular members of a group that a person actually observes, and that form the basis of his or her generalization
Stereotype
A generalization about a group that is based on a very small number of examples, that usually attributes some negative characteristic to the group.
To classify
- Divide a large number of things into subgroups, so that each member of the large group can be sorted into a subgroup
- To put something into a group of similar things
Criterion
Quality or mark that guides people in classifying things, the test by which people decide that something belongs in a certain category
Fact
An actual condition in the world, a state of affairs, a situation
Opinion
A belief that has not been proven, and may or may not be true

To discover that a statement is true, to find something that shows a statement is accurate
