Quiz - Sampling, Research Designs, Ethics Flashcards
What are ethics?
- rules to approve a study by
- standards to ensure a study is accurate
Types of data collection
- physiological/biological
- observational
- surveys/questionnaires
- records/existing data
Physiological/biological data
- uses special equipment
- used in healthcare
- ex: vital signs, blood tests, x-rays, lab tests
Observational data
Observing what is happening in a particular environment
Surveys/questionnaires
A structured and self-administered survey with questions people answer about themselves
Sampling methods
Qualitative:
• convenience
• snowball
• purposive
Quantitative: • convenience • quota • purposive • simple random • stratified random • cluster • systematic
Convenience sample (qualitative)
Participants who are available and are interested in the study
Snowball sample
Participants who are recommended by current participants until the group grows bigger and bigger
Purposive sample (qualitative)
Participants who are intentionally selected because some of their characteristics are related to the study
Convenience sample (quantitative sample)
People that are easily identified and available to be part of a sample
Quota sample
A non probability sample - when one or more criteria are used
Purposive sample (quantitative)
Participants are limited to those with certain characteristics
Simple random sample
A random process of letting the population select the participants
Stratified random sample
Members of the population are grouped by one or more characteristics and chosen for a sample
Cluster sample
Groups of the population are selected at random for a sample
