The vesting of the legislative , executive and judiciary powers of government in seperate bodies

When power is divided between different institutions (the Supreme Court, senate , the White House)

Why do codified constitutions tend to contain checks and balances
when one branch is stopping another branch from taking an action . It balances out their influence , prevents any single branch from acting alone . E.g. the president can propose a bill and pressurises congress but its congress that passes these laws . Once the bill is passed it still requires the presidents signature.

Principle that the authority of a state and its government is created and sustained by the consent of its people
