What are the steps to ensure an accurate BP? (7)
1) Pt avoid smoking, exercise, or caffeine for 30 minutes prior to taking the BP
2) Examination room should be comfortable and quiet
3) pt should sit quietly for at least 5 minutes with feet on the ground and uncrossed
4) Arm selected should be accessible without clothing, fistulas, scars
5) Palpate the brachial artery
6) Position arm so it is at heart level
7) Pt seated, rest arm on table or a little above pt waist
What is considered a normal BP? What is an elevated BP?
Normal : Systolic- <120 and <80
Elevated: 120-129 and >80
What is Stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension?
Stage 1: 130-139 mm Hg or 80-90
Stage 2: > or equal to 140 or greater or equal to 90
How do you measure orthostatic hypotension?
1) Measure BP and HR in two positions: supine after the patient is resting from 3 to 10 minutes then within 3 minutes once the patient stands up.
What are causes of orthostatic hypotension?
Medications
moderate or severe blood loss
prolonged bed rest
Disease of ANS
What is a orthostatic hypotension?
A drop of SYSTOLIC BP of at least 20 mm HG or diastolic of at least 10 mmHG of standing
What if there is irregularities when assessing the HR?
Listen to the apical pulse (apex of the heart) for a full minute
