Basic building blocks of all living organisms
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with a similar structure and function
What is an organ?
An aggregation of tissues performing specific functions
What is an organ system?
Different organs which work together to form organisms
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst
What is the job of enzymes in digestion?
To break down food into small soluble products
What do carbohydrates act on and what are the products?
Carbohydrates and simple sugars
What do lipase act on and what are the products of their action?
Lipids, glycerol and fatty acids
What is bile?
An alkaline digestive juice, neutralises HCL from stomach and emulsifies fat

What causes coronary heart disease?
Fatty material builds up in the coronary arteries, narrowing them
How can coronary heart disease be treated?
Statins and stents
What is cancer?
Uncontrolled cell growth and division
What is the difference between a benign and a malignant tumor?
Benign contained in one area, malignant spreads to other tissues
What is the xylem in a plant?
Tissue that transports water and mineral ions
What is the phloem in a plant?
Tissue that transports dissolved sugars
What is translocation?
Transportation of dissolved sugars through the phloem
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from leaves by evaporation through the stomata
Which factors affect the rate of transpiration?
Temperature, humidity, air movement, light intensity
