Quiz 7 Flashcards
Population Growth rate:
Rate at which the number of individuals in a population increases per unit of time.
Population Growth: What is population :
Population is dynamic - always changing over time
Population size of any organisms
impacts our daily lives
Population growth refers to:
how the number of individuals in a population increases or decreases with time:
Birth Rate
The growth is controlled by the rate at which new individuals are added to the population
Death Rate
Rate at which individuals leave the population.
Exponential Growth
Based on the size of the growing entity
Entity=
Organism within a population
The larger the population …
The faster it grows
How does population size expands?
By ever increasing increments during successive time intervals; Growth rate is proportional to current population size (n)
The larger the population gets, the more individuals there are to reproduce, the faster it grows.
Assumptions:
Continuous reproduction, all organisms are identical, environment is constant -> NOT realistic.
Population Growth Rate - Factors:
Often limited, determined by various factors :
- Density: Number of individuals in specified are of habitat
- Distribution: - Spatial arrangement or pattern of an individual over their habitat.
- Proximity to other individuals also can have an overall effect: find mates, predator protection , sharing resources.
Intrinsic aspects of a population:
Immigration: Adds individuals Emigration: Subtracts individuals Birth: Adds Death: subtracts so I+B-E-D= population Size!
