What is the difference between Pharisees and Sadducees?
Pharisees are legalists and Sadducees are liberals

- A baptism of repentance
Why was JTB upset with the Pharisees when they came to his baptism?
Because they did not want to repent, they just wanted to see why there was a large gathering
Why did Jews during that time think that they automatically went to Heaven?
Because they were the descendants of Abraham

He doesn’t think Jesus needs this baptism because it is for the unrighteous
(could also be because he didn’t think he was worthy)
What did Jesus’ baptism show/signify?
It shows that though he was without sin, he chose to identify with sinners
Why did Jesus fast for 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness?
- Because the Israelites were in the wilderness for 40 days
- Because Matthew is showing that Jesus is the true and better Israel, where they complained and failed the test, He remained perfect and passed
- It shows that temptation is not controlled by satan rather than God
What is fasting?
Going without food for a set amount of time to awaken our body and soul to our deep hunger and need for God
What does Satan try to get Jesus to do on his first temptation?
To give in and give up
What are 2 things that we can learn from the temptation of Jesus?
- Scripture is a sword
- Satan is crafty
Is there any way to escape punishment and be brought back into God’s favor?
Yes, God reconciles us to himself by a redeemer
Who is the redeemer?
The only redeemer is the Lord Jesus Christ
