Quiz - 6 Flashcards
What is post heating used for:
To soften the weld
What technique can be used to restart weld beads easier and more uniform:
Start ahead of where you ended and then back track to where you left off
Why would thick butt joints be grooved on both sides:
Penetration is better
Less distortion
Easier to weld
What can watching the back edge of a weld pool help you determine:
The correct Current Setting
The correct Arc Length
What is the purpose of a hot pass:
To smooth the pass out
To burn out any slag inclusions
What can happen if the molten weld pool becomes too large on a root weld:
Excessive penetration
Can burn through the metal on thinner metals
What effect does changing from a trailing angle to a leading angle have on a weld:
Wider bead
Less penetration
T / F: Some weld joints are grooved to increase penetration of the weld in the root area
True
How much should you space the root opening of a butt joint:
About the size of the rod you are using to weld
Why should some weldments be preheated before welding starts:
To reduce: -Cracking -Distortion -Hardness -Stresses (all of the above)
Why is it important to have a good cover pass:
It adds strength and helps hold the other passes together
Sketch 2 of the four standard grooves used for welded joints: (Gonna have to look this up i cant put a picture in here)

If you can understand this sad attempt then youre prolly good :)
Why are backing tapes used on some joints:
So the weld doesnt stick to the surface it is sitting on. You can also get good penetration without worrying about the back
