Quiz 3: Molars Flashcards
Do mandibular or maxillary teeth usually erupt first?
Mandibular
What is the curve of Spee?
Anterior-posterior curvature of the arch which begins at the tip of the canines and follows the buccal cusp tips of the premolars and molars when viewed facially
Importance of curve of Spee?
-Aids in the separation of the arches/teeth in protrusive movement
-Reduces posterior interferences
How is the curve of Spee achieved?
Through actions of condylar and anterior guidance
What is the curve of Wilson?
Mediolateral curve that contacts the buccal + lingual cusp tips on each side of the arch
In the curve of Wilson, how should the mandibular lingual cusps be in relation to the buccal cusps?
Lingual cusps should be lower than buccal cusps (since they’re tipped inward)
*inward inclination of the mandibular cusps
How does the curve of Wilson relate to mastication?
Food will be directed onto the occlusal table
*since there’s an inward inclination, food has a direct access to occlusal surface with no blockage from lingual cusps
If you view an individual tooth outside of the mouth will the lingual cusp still be taller than the buccal?
No, they no longer have curve of Wilson so the lingual cusps will actually be taller than the buccal
What is the lingual cusp line?
An imaginary line that can be drawn through the lingual cusps of maxillary posterior teeth
What is the buccal cusp line?
An imaginary line that can be drawn through the lingual cusps of mandibular posterior teeth
What is the central groove line?
An imaginary line that can be drawn through the central developmental grooves of the maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth
Where are interproximal contacts buccolingually?
Toward the buccal
Where are interproximal contacts occluso-cervially?
Toward the occlusal but drop as they go posteriorly
Which teeth are the most important in maintaining vertical dimension?
Molars
Are molar crowns longer mesiodistally or occluso-cervically?
Mesiodistally
