What is branding?
branding is creating a strong impression in the consumer’s mind that when they hear something that includes the brand color, sounds or phrases, they start feeling positive feelings

it is Erving Goffmans’ term for a person to create specific impressions of themselves in the mind of others
What is impression management?
Expressing certain information in order to impress certain ideas upon an audience during a social interaction

how we act in front of others or how we decide to act in front of others.

how we act when we are alone or in a more relaxed role. Informal presentation of self
What is Catch-22?
Catch-22 is a phenomenon where critics want female athletes to play like their male counter-parts but should also have a feminine body. For example people say WNBA is maligned because female athletes are not that athletic, and when they are athletic, they say that they are too unfeminine.
What is false activism?
It is when people participate in a form of public token support where their support is unlikely to be meaningful in the long-term
What is slacktivism?
supporting a political or social cause through social media or online means, characterized as involving very little commitment.
What is noise and signal?
Noise is the information that is distracting and signal is the information that is true.

What is the duck syndrome?
the idea that we have to show ourselves on social media as if we are the happiest whereas in reality we are actually going through serious struggles. This syndrome is in correspondence with how social media has impacted out mental health.

Iranian women who set herself on fire for not being allowed to enter the stadium.
What is the objectification theory?
theory that girls learn to consider their bodies as objects and commodities.
What is gender ally ship?
Individuals in a dominant group promoting marginalized group. In terms of gender, male athletes promoting female sports/athletes.

What is body display (nudity)?
Intent of body exposure may be to increase confidence, erase fears of judgement and make relatable content.
What is sexual behaviour?
Flirting behaviour- fleeting glances, smiling, self-grooming, head tilting and exposing of the neck
What is contextual factors?
Basically in a cinematic context, male gaze is shown to be focused towards female body parts, which turns females into objects of sexual attention.
What is sexual referents
When some ads use sexual imagery, that serve no purpose but to get attention. Basically the construction of active and desiring subjects within the verbal context of the ad.
What is sexual embeds and symbolism?
Sexual symbolism is basically when there are multiple close-ups of a women’ mouth/lips which are often used as a code for sex.
What is the purpose of socio-ecological model?
if we want to being about a change in the society or community, we cannot just do it at one level, we must address it at all levels.
basically, as much as media is responsible for the under-representation of female sports, it is also on us and the community to start changing the narrative and actually start watching the sport.

What is the Gatekeeper theory?
Gatekeeper theory, in the context of sport and media, is they way certain groups or individuals control the information (content) that is being presented to the audiences.
What influences the content that is presented?
Personal biases, organizational policies, perceived audience interests, and more. The selection process in this theory can often lead to over-representation or under representation of certain groups, genders or ethnicities.
How does gatekeeping theory influence audience perception?
Gatekeeping theory influences audience perception in a way that it changes their opinions, towards a particular athlete, sport or event. For example, For mens they show the NBA but on the same channel they cover college basketball for women, which, over a period of time, will change people’s perception that women sports is not that competitive.
